Controlling Moss on Hard Surfaces

An image of a half clean roof

Moss control on hard surfaces is an important job. The perfect situation for moss to grow in are damp, cool surfaces that don’t get much sunlight which is why roofs are often a common target and it can be difficult to stop it from growing especially in such hard to reach areas. Not only can moss begin to look unsightly, if growing on roofs it can eventually start to block gutter or drainage points which can result in damage. This is where it becomes necessary to take control. At ProWashing we offer a variety of different methods that can help you to clean moss from hard surfaces.

Moss Control Products

There are many different cleaning solutions available however the most safest and effective products on the market are those under the AlgoClear line of products. Not only are these products the most effective, they can be simply sprayed onto the surface that you are trying to treat and left to work in most cases.

Commonly referred to as biocides, these products are used as a more gentle way of solving a moss and algae problem. The process of using biocides to clean these biofilms is known as softwashing. Before the process of softwashing was used, moss was often removed from hard surfaces using a pressure washer which can actually end up causing significant amounts of damage especially to more sensitive areas such as roof tiles. Another area seriously affected by pressure washing were render and mortar. These surfaces were left saturated with water which, when the temperatures dropped and caused things to freeze, renders and bricks would begin to crack and become more brittle. Thankfully, the introduction of biocides such as AlgoClear Pro, removed this risk completely. Another positive to the biocides that we supply is that they do not contain bleach based Hypochlorite products which, when used, can cause discolouration to any surface that it is applied to. Substances such as AlgoClear and Mac Hi-Power are water based solutions and do not contain the harmful bleaching chemicals. Unlike the bleach based chemicals, these biocides do not need to be washed off of a surface so can simply be sprayed onto the area that you wish to treat and left which makes for a much more time effective treatment.

AlgoClear, AlgoClear Pro, Mac Hi-Power and Ranger all contain the active ingredient DDAC which is commonly used for softwashing and cleaning hard surfaces. At ProGreen we offer unique pack sizes especially with our Mac Hi-Power which ranges from 1L right up to 200L which gives the professional user great value for money. Ranger comes from the ICL brand and is also an excellent option providing an exceptional coverage area per bottle.

Important Legislation Change

Since the reclassification of moss as a plant, products for the treatment of moss now come under The Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations 2012. This means that only products that have HSE accreditations can legally be used for the control of moss. To avoid breaking the law, contractors and private users must ensure that the product being used is appropriately approved.
